The Great North Walk is a walking trail that runs from Sydney Harbour up to Newcastle Harbour. It's a 250 kilometer walk that passes through a diverse range of landscapes that was initially constructed as a Bicentennial celebration. Essentially the project linked many pre-existing walks together; which is evident when you are walking the track as you walk off an obviously well walked track onto a road section that takes you to the next well walked track. Sometimes the road sections can get a little tiring: especially for a bushwalk!
Kanangra Walls is located in the Kanangra-Boyd National Park, a nice 97km drive or 56km walk from Katoomba.
The walk winds up from Mittagong through the Nattai River Valley, over Beloon Pass, down into Wollondilly River Valley, through Yerranderie, over Scotts Main Rainge, down over the Cox's River, up through the Megalong Valley and out to Dunphy's Camp (alternate route). Although many people walk North to South (as Wikipedia suggests) we decided to walk South to North as Robert Sloss set out his track notes.
The Bibbulmun Track is one of the world's, and definitely one of Australia's, great long distance walk trails, stretching nearly 1000kms from Kalamunda (Perth Hills) to Albany (South Coast) through the heart of the scenic South West of Western Australia. The track opened in 1979 and consists of 50 sections that are approximately one days walk, with a purpose built camping area (shelter, water tank, pit toilet and tent sites) at the end of each day.
The iconic Katoomba to Jenolan Caves also happens to be our 'local', so we tend to do it often.
Mt Solitary is a very inviting walk, being so close and with a good mixture of terrain and some unique views.
The Main Range boasts many "highest" things, including toilets and 'mountains', restaurants...
The AAWT is Australia's premier wilderness hike, which starts down in Victoria and ends up near Canberra after crossing the Alps.
